Partners Nancy Birt and Kim McNeill had practiced in other law firms in Prince Edward Island and across Canada, yet both had always planned on owning their own office. In 1993 they together founded Birt & McNeill. The practice evolved as did the partners' family lives, making Birt & McNeill a unique office where a playpen or baby bottle was not considered out of place. Four years later, the burgeoning and family-friendly office was profiled in National Magazine, the official periodical of the Canadian Bar Association, for their focus on raising families and practicing law.

Today, Birt & McNeill is Prince Edward Island's only all female law firm. They have a longtime staff consisting of an office manager, a real estate paralegal and a legal assistant. Collectively, they have earned a proven record of providing their clients with premier legal services in a cost-effective manner.
